Sixth Annual Cowboy Camp
August 1 – August 5, 2016
Day 1: Cowboy Camp Program Director Candy Glidden welcomes campers to the first day of Cowboy Camp 2016.
Day 1: Campers watch ‘Pointing Them North’ — a Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum short film — in the Stars Along The Rawhide Trail Theater.
Day 2: Joe Contreras of the Institute of Texan Cultures speaks to campers about the vital importance of the American buffalo (bison) to Native Americans and the effect of the cattle drives.
Day 3: Campers take photos with ‘Tumbleweed’ the Longhorn and learn about the breed’s traits and history from handler Ron Sitton.
Day 4: Ricky Dolifka, of the Ricky Dolifka of Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Buffalo Soldiers Heritage & Outreach Program tells stories about the Buffalo Soldiers, and Native American tribes the Kiowas and Comanches.
Day 5: Campers learn about features and functions of the chuck wagon and campsite and, assisted by Charlie Nagel, Joe Adams, and John Paul Barre, make biscuits baked in a Dutch-oven just as they would have been out on the trail.
